So, I need to pose some questions to those who read this. Why is being overweight considered "normal". When did it become "abnormal" to be in shape. Why are overweight people considered "real", and those of us that are actually in shape are somehow "not".
My wife and I were shopping this weekend at Macy's (for those not in the states, a "nice" department store). My wife was helping my daughter pick out some new winter clothes (it seems like we're buying her a new wardrobe every 6 months, can the growing slow down please!). I was about 30 or so feet away from my girls, and there were 2 women (I'll guess early 20s, and both overweight but not obese) between where my wife/daughter were, and where I was (they were closer to me). I heard the following in reference to my wife (whom they were glaring at), no lie:
Women #1 - "I could look like that, if I starved myself"
Women #2 - "I wonder if her finger nails are discolored" (she then makes a gesture of shoving her finger down her throat)
Women #1 and #2 - laugh together
Women 1 and 2 turn my way, and see me glaring it them. Now I am a very calm, very patient person, but my girls are off limits. I was seeing red, but thankfully I've learned to control my responses in my 37 years on earth.
Me (quietly) - "You might want to check your surroundings before you slander someone. You never know where their husband might be."
Women #1 - blank stare
Women #2 - blank stare
I walk past them towards me girls, as I pass them I quietly (almost a whisper) state "jealousy is a very ugly way to live."
As soon as they thought I was out of earshot I hear "what an ass hole."
Maybe I was, but it was better than the tirade I wanted to lay on them. What is sad, and maybe I'm wrong, is I think much of America feels the same way those women did. Why is being in shape seen as a bad thing. I hear all the time "clothes designed for real women", excuse me but why are overweight women any more "real" then my wife, or the other people who chose to eat healthy and exercise.
I just don't get it. Sorry for the rant. I hope I don't get banned.
